The Queens College CUNY MFA Program presents “Crosscurrents,” an exhibition of nineteen Master of Fine Arts degree candidates. The show will be on view from March 23 to April 2, 2011, and the Opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 25, from 7:00- 9:00pm. Embracing methods of drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and video, the works of these emerging artists reflect the innovative and interdisciplinary spirit of the Queens College CUNY MFA Program.

Curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud, the exhibition showcases work by Lisa Candage, James Cassidy, Joyce Chan, Pansum Cheng, Karen Cintron, Becky Franco, Matthew F. Greco, Patty Harris, Osaretin Ighile, Kaitlin M. Kelty, Henry Kielmanowicz, Thea Lanzisero, Matthew Palmer, Antonia A. Perez, Aaron Schraeter, Kim Sheridan, Willliam Steinman, Joanna Sztencel, and Debra Zechowski.

A “crosscurrent” is defined as a current flowing into or across another current. Similarly, the artists at Queens College represent a culturally and ethnically diverse group working within one of the most cosmopolitan areas within the United States. Their wide-ranging approaches in art-making, coupled with a strong interest in the neighborhood’s local communities, allowed them a unique opportunity in their creative processes – processes that occur at the intersection of the profoundly new and the traditional, that invert the private and domestic space into the public sphere, and that reconstitute and transform cast-off materials.

For example, Osaretin Ighile's industrial debris collected from garbage dumpsters morph into beautiful sculptures such as the portrait of President Obama. Antonia A. Perez's assemblages of everyday consumer products transform into formal, delicate, abstract works. Artists such as Joyce Chan and Karen Citron explore traditional materials such as paper through weaving and collage. Becky Franco's haunting paintings of domestic spaces blur the line between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Indeed, the Queens College location is a fertile ground for these artists to emerge.

A conversation between Greg Sholette, artist, author, activist, co-founder, REPOhistory and Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Queens College, New York, and John Kuo Wei Tchen, public historian, dumpster diver, co-founder of the Museum of the Chinese in the Americas and Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, Gallatin School, New York University, moderated by Frederick Kaufman, Professor at City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism.

How can local history become a tool to reclaim time and space from master narratives? When is the process of forgetting convenient for urban development? And how has history itself become a hip marketable means of gentrification? This evening’s conversation will touch upon REPOhistory’s Lower Manhattan Sign Project (1992) and Tchen's "below the grid" history of the intermingled and creative port culture of Mannahatta, informing a discussion of the politics of public space. The Seaport Museum attic space once housed the old Fulton Ferry Hotel.

Spencer Finch produces work in a wide variety of mediums, including watercolor, photography, glass, electronics, video and fluorescent lights. He is perhaps best known for dealing with the elusive concepts of memory and perception through light installations.

Queens College MFA Studio Art Program is proud to announce the opening of Verses from the Abstract, an exhibition of the work of 20 current participants in the program, curated by Herb Tam, Associate Curator of Exit Art, NewYork. The exhibition, organized by the MFA program at Queens College is presented through the cooperation of Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs at their location in Long Island City.

Mr. Tam writes: “It strikes me that in a moment when strategies of conceptualism, performance, and appropriation are being valorized in institutions and the art market in a circular, nostalgic discourse with a vague 1960s and 70s patina, the group of artists at the Queens College MFA Studio Art program are hand making their art in painting, drawing, sculpture, sound, ceramics and video. As varied as their work looks and feels, these artists are united by how they extract form from unique, unspecific places of language and meaning. I see their work as discrete, highly personal statements or “verses from the abstract,” as A Tribe Called Quest, the Queens rap group, once riffed.

Many in this group are distinguished by their processing of our culture of waste and decadence. They turn our detritus into idiosyncratic objects charged with the grime and socialization of the original materials. Among many examples, Osaretin Ighile crudely but lovingly assembles a sculptural portrait of the Nigerian musical icon Fela Kuti from beer cans, food packaging and other trash; Antonia Perez fashions an “emotive painting” by tiling empty Kleenex tissue boxes; and Lisa Candage’s surreal send-up of a cooking demonstration distorts the reality of televised perception in deceptively complicated ways.

These artists scavenge all corners of mass production to collage, pile, cram and/or finesse coherence into abstract and representational form. But others conjure forms from relative scratch or from personal points of reference. Among these are Matthew F Greco’s abstract, ceramic constructions that reference primitive built structures; Becky Franco’s lusciously realistic paintings of interior moments from her suburban home; and Joyce Chan’s reductively repetitive drawings of Chinese scholar’s rocks.

Art in this program exists in varied forms, with varied emphasis and for various reasons. And all of these artists are positively committed to the possibilities of creativity and expression in general. It is a welcome development that artists just about to leave academic training are indeed invested in the awkward, difficult, and unwieldy process of manifesting unforeseen objects that consolidate ideas, attitudes and feelings.”

In conjunction with this exhibition, participants in the Queens College MFA Creative Writing and Music Programs will present a reading and performance featuring a smorgasbord of poetry, prose and music. They will be turning the spotlight on a selection of developing talents with a diverse body of work that emphasizes fun in unique and surprising ways.

So this weekend I saw the Hernan Bas show at Lehmann Maupin on Saturday, and then hit his other show at the Brooklyn Museum on Sunday.

I would recommend both shows. Not to say either way on If I liked the work or not, but things I noticed was his awesome choice of color and brushstroke. The paintings also have a dreamy, childlike fantasy that was very wonderful. I was surprised to see almost all of the Brooklyn show was owned by one family and also to see the artist signed all the work on the front of each canvas. Below are two works I liked plus a few images from the contemporary section I really enjoyed.

Since January 2007, Nato has organized major projects for Creative Time such as Democracy in America: The National Campaign (2008), Paul Chan’s acclaimed Waiting for Godot in New Orleans (2007) and Mike Nelson’s A Psychic Vacuum. Previous to Creative Time, he worked as Curator at MASS MoCA where he completed numerous large-scale exhibitions such as The Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere (2004), a survey of political art of the 1990s with a catalogue distributed by MIT Press. His writings have appeared in numerous publications including BookForum, Art Journal, tema celeste, Parkett, Cabinet and The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. The College Art Association awarded him for distinguished writing in Art Journal in 2004. He recently curated an exhibition for Independent Curators International titled Experimental Geography with a book available by Melville House Publishing. His book on art and activism is due out by Autonomedia in October 2009.
